TV Stuff: HBO’s “Vinyl”

This week, HBO released the teaser for their new series Vinyl.

I’ve been hearing rumblings about this series for a little bit now. Terence Winter, who’s worked on Boardwalk Empire and some indie series The Sopranos is the creator and he will be working with Mick Jagger and Martin Scorsese. Honestly, I love anything Scorsese does and the last time he worked with Winter it was on Boardwalk Empire. Which never got the love it deserved but that’s another post for another time.

Vinyl takes place in 1970s New York and besides the actors it looks like New York and the music of that time will also be the stars. Speaking of actors, Winter pulled in one of my Boardwalk Empire alumni favorites to star in it as a record label executive looking to resurrect his label: Bobby Cannavale. I first saw Cannavale when he was introduced in season 3 of Boardwalk Empire as the loose-cannon gangster antagonist for that season. He came at the perfect time as I was mourning the loss of a favorite character of mine who was killed at the end of season 2 and he breathed so much life into season 3 for me.

If you don’t know who Bobby Cannavale is, you should. His performance in Boardwalk Empire was one of my favorite kinds of crazy. You should also follow him on Twitter if you don’t already. He comes up with brilliant hashtags and offers great color commentary during award show season…

Besides Boardwalk Empire, I would recommend watching his movie The Station Agent. His character in it is completely opposite of what he did in Boardwalk EmpireHe’s absolutely delightful in it and the movie will make you laugh and cry. WIN-WIN. You might also recognize the star of the film as a certain Lannister…

So Bobby Cannavale + Scorsese + 1970 NY/Music Scene + Cocaine (you know there’s going to be cocaine) = a wild ride. I can’t wait for 2016.
